Should we start digging new holes?

Gerry Abbott

This article responds to questions raised by John Rogers in an earlier volume. His suggestion that we might as well stop teaching English to so many young people who eventually make no use of it is countered by considerations of non-interference, equality of educational opportunity, and the inherent value of foreign language learning. On the other hand, his support for the teaching and use of the mother tongue is whole heartedly endorsed, and it is suggested that many teachers of ESL have a contribution to make here.
