Rob Nolasco is an EFL consultant. He has worked in secondary schools in France and Turkey, with adults in the UK, on ESP projects in Saudi Arabia, as Director of an ELT Project in Angola, and as Project Director for CBT in Morocco. His interests are management training in educational settings and problems in setting up the infrastructure for teaching and learning.
Lois Arthur is Courses Manager for the Bell Educational Trust. She has worked in secondary schools in Germany, in senior posts in language schools in the UK, and was responsible for the overall professional development of teachers working for CBT in Morocco. Her interests include the training of native speaker teachers of EFL, and the problems involved in teaching young learners.
The difficulties experienced by some British teachers in introducing communicative techniques in the secondary classroom in Morocco led to an examination of the problem of innovation in English language teaching at school level. The teachers' perceived difficulties are discussed, and it is argued that teachers need to take account of learners' expectations and introduce change gradually. The introduction of change should also include an element of learner training, and this article offers suggestions for how this might be achieved.
