Teaching tense and aspect: a systematic approach

Agneta Svalberg

Agneta Svalberg has a degree in General Linguistics and English from the University of Lund, Sweden. She started her career in 1973 in Mexico, where she taught ESP and general EFL to adults for seven years. She has given a number of talks and workshops on the design and use of supplementary teaching materials. She is presently teaching EFL to adults in Greece.

Grammar sometimes seems to be a collection of unconnected, rather random rules, which makes it difficult to teach and learn. In trying to show students that grammar is, in fact, systematic and easy to handle, I have developed a model which attempts to give students and teacher an overall view of the English verb system. One aim of the model is to help students grasp some of the concepts which underlie each choice of tense/aspect. It is both explanatory and a memory aid. The article contains a description of the model, followed by a section on how it can be used with students at different levels.
