The process of ELT reform in Czechoslovakian schools

Richard Repka

Richard Repka is a senior researcher in English language teaching in Czechoslovak schools at the Pedagogical Research Institute in Bratislava. In this capacity he is responsible for syllabuses, textbooks, teachers' handbooks, etc. He is also head of the department of foreign languages. He has published numerous articles on English language teaching.

This article concerns the recent changes in the system, status, function, content, and methodology of English teaching in Czechoslovak elementary and secondary schools. It also gives a short account of the experimental evaluation of the new English-language teaching programme in secondary grammar schools, where the greatest changes have been carried out.
