Humanistic activities and teacher motivation
Françoise Cormon has been teaching in state schools in Geneva for fifteen years. She is now head of the English department for the seventeen secondary schools of the Cycle d'Orientation and is involved in teacher training. Her interests are humanistic approaches, communicative grammar practice, and testing communicative competence.
This article describes five activities that are humanistic techniques in that they take into account the interests and personalities of the students and deal with the 'here-and-now'. Good news for the teacher: they are rewarding not only for the student, but for the teacher too. After all, a happier teacher makes a better learning situation and thus more efficient learners.
