A video- and computer-aided English course

Huang Jun

Huang Jun is Associated Professor of English at Jinan University, Guangzhou (Canton), People's Republic of China. He graduated in English literature from Beijing University in 1954 and became an English instructor in 1964. Now he is interested in using computers to assist the teaching of English. He is Vice Co-Ordinator of CALLNET (Computer Assisted Language Learning Network), a consortium of eighteen universities and polytechnics in China and also the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Shortage of English teachers at Jinan University led to video and computers being used to overcome the difficulty. Video is used to ‘present’ the lessons and provide written exercises and tests. Finally, the teacher clears up the remaining problems with students. The learners find the instant feedback from computers stimulating, while their learning method undergoes a change. And the teachers smile smugly because they don't have to mark any papers at all!
