Using news broadcasts for authentic listening comprehension
Bruce Morrison has taught EFL at all levels in the UK and overseas, and at the time of writing this article was working as a lecturer in EFL at Tsing Hua University in Beijing, China. He has been involved in teacher training for several years, and is at present training university and college EFL teachers. His current interests include the development of a systematic listening comprehension programme, the use of computers for self-access study, and teacher development.
This article subscribes to the view that authentic listening materials are useful to all students, and not just students whose level of English is advanced. The article summarizes a model of listening comprehension that the author has found helpful, and provides two lesson outlines (one for an elementary class, one for a more advanced class) based on the same news broadcast material.
