Conditionals revisited

Glenn Fulcher

Director of English Studies at the English Institute, Nicosia, Cyprus. He holds an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, and trained as a teacher at Christ's College, Cambridge. At present, he is a part-time research student with the University of Lancaster, working on oral language testing.

Using a reasonably large database of written text and a simple statistical technique, this small study looks once again at the issue of teaching conditionals and other if forms. It is suggested that the selection of the forms to be included in the syllabus may be related to the needs of the students in studying English, while at the same time acknowledging that certain aspects of the results are restricted in application and may benefit from a study using a much more precise definition of text-type.
