Self-access facilities: what are they for?

Lew Barnett and Geoff Jordan

co-founder and director of ESADE Idiomas' self-access facilities in Barcelona. He holds a Ph.D in American Studies and is currently engaged in planning new self-access facilities for the school.
CALL co-ordinator at ESADE, and co-founder and director of the self-access facilities. He has an MA in scientific method. He is presently working on a concordance program and also, with Lew Barnett, on the new self-access facilities.

When setting up self-access facilities, it is important to concentrate not only on hardware and materials, but also on procedures: how will the facilities be used? In this paper, we argue that more attention should be paid to how self-access facilities are used and we suggest that the following areas are particularly important:

• Accessibility and revelance of materials;

• Learner training and learning strategies;

• Alternative uses of self-access facilities.
