ELT: the native speaker's burden?

Robert Phillipson

Robert Phillipson studied at Cambridge and Leeds universities, and has a doctorate from the University of Amsterdam. He worked for The British Council in ELT posts in Algeria, Yugoslavia, and London, and since 1973 has been a Lecturer at Roskilde University, Denmark. His main research between language education and societal power.

This article analyses samples of the promotion of the native speaker and British ELT expertise. It shows how unscientific and inappropriate such arguments are, and considers what minimal qualifications a language teacher should possess.1
