Books that have influenced me

Chris Kennedy

Chris Kennedy is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Centre for English Language Studies in the School of English at the University of Birmingham. His teaching career began as a VSO in Nigeria many years ago and he has worked and taught in several countries since. He has had two secondments from Birmingham, one to the British Council as ESP Adviser in Tunisia, and the second as Chief Executive of the Centre for British Teachers in London. He has published books and articles on ESP, language policy, ELT management, and innovation. He is a member of the ELT Journal Editorial Advisory Panel. He is currently Chairman of IATEFL (The International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language)

Most of the reviews in ELT Journal are of recent publications, designed to help readers to keep up to date. But what of the historical perspective? What of books that have ‘stood the test of time’? What of books that have been influential for particular individuals at significant points in their career?

We asked Chris Kennedy, the current Chair of IATEFL, to select three books that particularly affected his professional development. This is his choice.

The Reviews Editor would welcome feedback on this feature from readers and suggestions for future contributors.
