Language conundrums

Michael Swan

Michael Swan is a freelance writer specializing in English language teaching and reference materials. His publications include Practical English Usage (OUP, 1980) and The New Cambridge English Course (with Catherine Walter, CUP 1990-).

This is the second in a series of biannual articles on language problems. The questions raised in the previous article (ELT Journal 45/4 October 1991) prompted a gratifyingly large number of readers to send in their views (including a group from the Edinburgh Applied Linguistics Department, who took an afternoon off from whatever it is that Applied Linguists normally do and came close to solving the lot). I am most grateful to them and to everybody else who wrote. As before, I shall recapitulate the questions and report on the answers, before setting some new problems for readers' consideration.
