Ten tips for making ELT counterparting work

Ewen Arnold and Ghada Sarhan

Works in the INSETT area of the Institute of English Language Education, Lancaster University. The article was written while he was the commercial materials writer at the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, Oman. He has taught in Ethiopia, Germany, Libya, Liverpool, and Oman. He has written readers, and business materials for ELT.
Recently completed an MA in Language Studies at Lancaster University, and has returned to Oman as counterpart materials writer in the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training.

Successful training of counterparts to take over from expatriate specialists can make or break a project. Yet very little has been written on how to plan for success or how to develop a counterpart once he or she is appointed. This article is an attempt not only to pass on the authors' experience of counterparting but also to start a debate on how counterparting can best be achieved.
