Using lesson plans as a means of reflection
University lecturer in the Department of English at the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong. Her research interests include journal writing, reflective teaching, reflective learning, diary studies, teacher education, writing, and issues related to the teaching of ESL, EAP, and ESP.
This paper suggests using lesson plans in a lesson series as a means of reflection to help inexperienced or pre-service teachers make use of their limited experience to bring about self-development in teaching. It operates on the cyclic theory of reflection used by Kemmis and McTaggart (1982) and bridges the gap between reflections made on the micro and macro dimensions of teaching. This paper discusses how reflective lesson plans are prepared, and gives an example from experience of using them in a lesson series to bring about improvement in teaching. How and why the reflective activitly helps is discussed, and implications are taken up.
