On Thornbury's 'Unbearable Lightness'
University of Oaxaca, Mexico Email: angelesclemente@hotmail.com
Thornbury's belief is that there are two current models of pedagogy: the academic and the therapeutic. He condemns them both, and identifies them respectively as the 'high road' and the 'inward' directions in EFL teaching. He goes on to put forward a third 'outward' direction. Although I find his quotations quite interesting, and some of them rather amusing, I do not share his beliefs. I want first to discuss the way Thornbury presents the academic and therapeutic models, then I will deal with his 'third way', and argue against this alternative as the only and exclusive path that teachers must take.
