Viewing comprehension in the EFL classroom

Margaret Allan

Video is a new resource in the ELT classroom. This article seeks to identify what is unique about it in comparison with the many otber resources teachers are accustomed to using. It takes as its starting point the properties of the resource and this leads to a consideration of the classroom techniques these suggest. The main focus is on the possibility of viewing without sound and a method of exploiting this for gist listening practice is outlined. Finally the article offers guidelines for the selection of materials suitable for this approach to ‘viewing comprehension’.
