Developing the stylistic and lexical awareness of advanced students
Error analysis can be used to help determine what a learner still needs to be taught. Studies of the advanced learner indicate that problems are caused by lexis, style, and appropriateness, but there is little teaching material designed to help the second language learner with these areas. This article presents three types of exercise which are designed to develop the advanced learner's awareness in these areas, and also indicates how translation may be incorporated and used at the active stage. Finally, the author justifies a somewhat analytical and academic approach to this area of learning/teaching for the advanced learner.
