The use of non-ELT simulations
The first part of this article raises various issues related to the use of simulations in ELT. The second part presents a set of guidelines for running a ready-to-use simulation contained in the Appendix. The simulation helps to illustrate some of the issues raised.
The issues discussed form the basis of a rationale, and include the need for reality and credibility; the discrepancy between role profile and learner personality; situation-generated language use; acquisition; and ESP (English for Specific Purposes). It is argued that there are certain advantages in using non-EFL Simulations in ELT (as opposed to simulation-like activities designed specifically for ELT).
