Motivating those who know it all1

Aleksandra Gotbiowska

Polish students who have learnt English abroad often feel unduly negative about the English language classes they attend. Their English is very fluent, but not necessarily correct. They tend to lack self-criticism and rely too much on their intuitions and their own observations. Although this is a difficult problem, do we, the teachers, too often blame circumstances, rather than ourselves, for our failures? The only way to deal with learners who think they know it all is to help them dramatically increase their language awareness.
