Teaching spectacles and learning festivals
Hywel Coleman is a doctoral student in the Department of Linguistics at Lancaster University. Previously he worked in Indonesia for eleven years, as an EFL teacher, teacher trainer, and curriculum designer, in a variety of vocational and educational organizations. He is the author of two ESP readersPetroleum Upstream (Heinemann 1980) and Petroleum Downstream(Heinemann 1984)and he has edited a two-volume collection of papers on language use in work contexts,Language and Work (Mouton 1984 and 1985). He is currently editing another collection on the same topic, and writing a book on the teaching of study skills.
This article discusses an attempt to bring about a revolution in the behaviour of teachers and learners in English-language classrooms at the university level in Indonesia. Two types of ritual are discussed, and a model for an alternative form of classroom behaviour is identified. The experiment is then presented in detail, and, finally, it is evaluated in a variety of ways.
