Language conundrums: Some responses to my cry for help
freelance writer specializing in English language teaching and reference materials. His publications include Practical English Usage (OUP, 1980) and The New Cambridge English Course(with Catherine Walter, CUP 1990).
In the July 1990 issue of ELT Journal (Vol. 44/3), I published a letter asking forreaders' help in solving eleven language conundrums. A fair number of people wrote with comments on one or more of the problems I had raised; their letters contained a wealth of useful insights and suggestions, and one correspondent enclosed some extermely useful corpus material. Seven of the eleven conundrums seem to me to have been more or less solved as a result, and I am most grateful to all the people concerned. In this article, I shallrecapitulate the problems, report on the answers, and offer some more problems for readers' consideration.
