Roles of pathways in self-access centres

James Kell and Clive Newton

Teacher and teacher trainer at the Bell School of Languages, Saffron Walden. He recently completed an MA in applied linguistics at Essex University. From 1991 to 1995 he was a trainer and materials writer on ODA/British Council projects in Chinese universities.
MA in applied linguistics from Lancaster University. From 1990 to 1996 he was a materials writer, trainer, and consultant on ODA/British Council projects in Chinese universities.

This article discusses some possible roles for self-access pathways, particularly in cultures which have no tradition of self-study. It suggests how pathways might influence the design and running of self-access centres, and gives an illustration of how pathways were designed and employed in a centre in China. Feedback is based on a mini-survey distributed to thirty users.
