Providing student writers with pre-text feedback

Ana Frankenberg-Garcia

Lecturer in the Department of Translation at the Instituto Superior de Linguas e Administração, Lisbon. She has a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Edinburgh University. Her main interests are the teaching of writing and translation, and Portuguese–English crosslinguistic influence. E-mail: <garcia{at}publico.pt>

This paper argues that the best moment for responding to student writing is before any draft is completed. It analyses ways in which this can be put into practice in the composition classroom, and reports on how a group of EFL writers reacted to the kind of pre-text feedback proposed.
